Birds of a Feather meetings (BoF) are participant-oriented sessions in which attendees discuss research interests in an informal environment and without a pre-planned agenda. ECCB2022 attendees are invited to submit their proposals for a BoF session to share ideas on specific topics or to schedule open gatherings with research communities.
Birds of a feather session at ECCB2022: Sex and Gender Biases in Technology and Artificial Intelligence
Schedule:
Tuesday, September 20, 2022 | 12:45 PM – 2:00 PM
Organised by:
Bioinfo4Women
Details:
In the recent years, there has been a progressive process for taking awareness of internal biases in our society related to sex and gender. These biases have shown to be pervasive in almost all dimensions of our communities. If left unattended, these biases propagate to unforeseen aspects like the imprinting of implicit biases in computational algorithms and technology developments. We will discuss the current situation regarding these biases in our community as well as to discuss neglected and overlooked aspects of gendering in healthcare solutions that leverage artificial intelligence, biosensors, and personalized medicine approaches to predict and prevent disease outcomes. Recognized researchers working on these topics will express their view on the current situation, followed by an open debate with the public. The session will finish with a sign of copies of the book “Sex and Gender Biases in Technology and Artificial Intelligence” by its authors.
Speakers:
- Maria Jose Rementeria: Strategies towards sex and gender equality and to increase diversity
- R. Gonzalo Parra: What happens if we don’t make our biases conscious?
- Monica Cabrera: The gender dimension at the 7th European Student Council Symposium (ESCS)
- Davide Cirillo: Presentation of the book “Sex and Gender Biases in Technology and Artificial Intelligence”
